Hầm Vũ Khí Bí Mật – Secret Weapon Cellar is a small, unassuming house in District 3 that hides one of Saigon’s most remarkable wartime relics: a secret underground bunker once packed with weapons for the 1968 Tet Offensive attack on the Independence Palace. Today, visitors can step through an ordinary doorway and descend into the narrow cellar, where nearly three tonnes of guns, explosives, and ammunition were once stored by Saigon commandos, and learn how a seemingly normal family home helped shape a turning point in the Vietnam War. Set beneath a typical tube house in a quiet alley off Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Street, the bunker was secretly dug in 1967 by operative Trần Văn Lai, who smuggled weapons in over multiple trips and hid the entrance beneath the tiled living-room floor. Cleverly camouflaged trap doors, air vents, and escape routes allowed the cache to remain undiscovered even when the building was searched and shelled, making it one of the largest and most successful clandestine weapon depots used by the Saigon commandos. Recognized today as a national historic site, Hầm Vũ Khí Bí Mật has been carefully preserved, with original photographs, period weapons, and interpretive displays that bring the stories of its owners and fighters to life.
